Graduate Program in Physics: M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees

Welcome to the site of the Graduate Studies at IFT-UNESP

The Institute for Theoretical Physics offers graduate degrees in physics which are of great tradition in the Brazilian universities scenario. Here, generations of theoretical physicists have studied. You will find them all around Brazil and in many other countries. Today, many students strive to obtain a degree based on a strong conceptual basis in an environment that fosters original scientific research.

IFT is well-known as a an excellence center in elementary particle physics, cosmology, quantum field theory, superstrings and nuclear and hadronic physics. Today, these research lines are joined by new prospective developments in cold atoms physics, Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear physics applied to biology, economy and meteorology. There is also an experimental group working in high energy physics, inserted in large international collaborations, like the LHC.

The IFT-UNESP is not very large. A little more than 20 supervisors and about 70 students. No departments. We value the contact between students and supervisors.

Two main pillars form the basis upon the graduate programs builds. On one hand, a solid conceptual foundation gained at the basic disciplines. On the other hand, research activities, where originality and autonomy are the keywords.

Some peculiarities of the Institute:

• you can come to the institute at any time, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
• Every student has a working place, with a computer and air conditioning.
• the coordination fosters the participation of PhD students in international conferences, workshops and schools. Special funds are available to make this possible. MSc. students may participate in national conferences.
• many events take place at the IFT-UNESP. You will meet a variety of researchers in conferences and summer courses, as well students from other universities.
• a weekly colloquium offers possibilities of widening your interests.
