This school will have a format similar to previous ICTP Latin-American string schools held in Cuba (1998), Mexico (2000), Sao Paulo (2003), and Bariloche (2007) . There will be three weeks of lectures starting with basic string theory and continuing to more advanced topics. The confirmed lecturers are
Week one (Dec. 3-8 in new IFT building in Barra Funda):
Barton Zwiebach (bosonic strings),
George Thompson (differential geometry),
Seif Randjbar Daemi (supergravity),
Nathan Berkovits (superstring).
Week two (Dec. 10-14 in old IFT building at Rua Pamplona 145):
Joe Polchinski (D-branes),
David Berenstein (AdS-CFT),
Kumar Narain (dualities),
Fernando Quevedo (phenomenology).
Week three (Dec. 16-20 in new IFT building in Barra Funda):
Juan Maldacena (advanced topics),
Freddy Cachazo (twistor methods).
There will be additional seminars by invited speakers and advanced participants during the third week, and there will be a public lecture by Juan Maldacena on December 17 at 19:00.
Week one (Dec. 3-8) and week three (Dec. 16-20) of the school will be at the new IFT building which is across the street from the Barra Funda metro/bus station. During these weeks, there will be bus transportation from the hotel to the new IFT building for participants staying at the hotel. Week two (Dec. 10-14) of the school will be at the old IFT building which is next door to the hotel on Rua Pamplona.
The lectures will assume knowledge of quantum field theory and general relativity at the graduate student level, but will not assume previous familiarity with string theory. There will also be daily discussion sessions and homework exercises. References for the lectures will be found on the webpage of the program. It is highly recommended that participants bring with them the string theory books of Polchinski and Green-Schwarz-Witten.
Hotel and meal expenses will be paid at the school to participants accepted from Latin-American countries. Funding for travel expenses will be reimbursed after the school by the organizers from the country of the participant.
Applications for financial support are now closed.
